Xubuntu 9.10
Just installed Xubuntu 9.10 alternate Card Reader and Wireless work out of the box, sound as well. Display Resolution has been set to 800x480. On install you have got to add boot parameter vga=769 else Display is unreadable while Installation is running.
== Xubu 9.04 == (8.10 Remix)
(a) dd if=image of=/dev/sde
(b) dd if=image of=/dev/sde1
I had no luck with (a) (which was suggested) and with (b) I got GRUB and then a freeze. what filesystem is the bootstick supposed to be ? ext2 ? else the partn table won't match.
- El.x.jtr0: Do you mean Xubuntu or Ubuntu 8.10 Remix? With Xubuntu you shouldn't use the "dd" command. Make use of USB-creator or UNetbootin. If it is Ubuntu 8.10 Remix than the "dd" command would be ok (sdx without a digit. the bootlader is already in the image) but make use of the image-writer because its easier. Might your USB-Stick maybe not bootable? You don't need the make a filesystem because the dd-Image will make one on the Stick as well as a Bootloader. What filesystem exactly in the Image is, that I don't know. It is a modified dd-Image of BrunnenIt Reset-stick, if its about the Ubuntu 8.10 Remix.
- Addon: Don't use the 8.10 Image or the Kernel pakages on any other device than the Quanta IL1-Design, because its optimized for the C7-CPU only. (The USB-Stick Image should be ok on any x86 CPU)
- I was referring to those 3 files like http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UYU27QIN . I could not get that image to boot.
- What exactly did you write? "dd if=image of=/dev/sde" or "dd if=usbstick.img of=/dev/sde"
- the if= part was the correct filename usbstick.img , there is no room for error. still both variants with outfile failed.
- Ok. Still no luck, or have you been able to make a bootable Stick? If you still didn't the might be another way.

- What exactly did you write? "dd if=image of=/dev/sde" or "dd if=usbstick.img of=/dev/sde"
- You can boot a OS from USB (Stick, HDD or DVD) and apply the image directly. Booting from a external Harddisk might be the easist. In most cases the target would be "sda":
In case of Ubuntu: sudo dd if=Remixv2.img of=/dev/sda
Netbook Remix
The screenshots of your project look really nice. I'm already downloading your torrent to try it for myself. But I have some questions on it:
- Your write that standby works depending on BIOS version. Can you tell which version you use?
- Does Netbook remix use squashfs like the Ubuntu originally shipped by ONE or is it small enough to fit onto the disk uncompressed?
Thanks for sharing your work with us! Greetings --Cliffhanger 18:03, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Answers:
- (update) It wasn't about the Bios, my fault.
- no squashfs, but feel free to apply it. I installed it package for package based on the command-line Ubuntu. Its a small selection of tools wich are fitting a daily usage. There is still space (without squashfs) to install the one or other application.
Cliffhanger:
- Maybe I'm too stupid to use Google the right way, but I can't find the Aris Kira BIOS archive you're talking about. Do you have some link for me?
- I'm not really keen on using squashfs. I asked because I want a small OS with only the tools needed for daily use and I'm really annoyed of compressing the filesystem after a few updates. I don't need programs like a CD burning suite for a computer that hasn't even got a CD drive...

Answer:
- here are the archives: http://www.airissupport.com/descargas/Descargas/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2fdescargas%2fDescargas%2fKIRA%20Series%2fBIOS&FolderCTID=&View={5CEDBC04-F549-4E94-AFC3-B72114D7599E} I just learned and don't know why, but the latest release note (q1d46a) was removed. Only in Q1D30A is still a TXT file but I think this is actually the resume from standby fix (which needed to beeing fixed till q1d46a itself ;)).
Franka:
I wonder whether it would be difficult to get the modem working in nb-remix. An adapted script or howto for boot-remix-from-sd-card would be nice at some point. --franka 01:45, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Answer:
- Maybe I did something wrong, but when I tried to install the Modem in NBR, then the sound stoped working. The Modules are in the kernel minus (changed) intel-hda, but not loaded.
- The Cardreader is still far from working perfekt, at least for the cards I own. Textfiles, Sound, Pictures are ok, but starting the OS from SD-Card seems pretty brave.
My big Hope for everything is Ubuntu 9.04. NBR is ... good enough, but feel free to change it as much as you like.
Some more questions
- You have posted a new version of your Netbook Remix with some improvements. As I already have personalized my copy of "Version 1", and don't want to repeat all this configuration, do you have some kind of changelog that would enable me to realize these improvements, too? Especially the speed improvements and the governor change would be interesting, a splash screen would be nice also.
- When looking a the output of dmesg, I found a line indicating that the system tries to use the network interface with the module "8139cp" and switches then to "8139too". Blacklisting 8139cp in
/etc/modprobe.d/blackistfollowed by asudo update-initramfs -ugot this message removed for me. - You tell that you hope for Ubuntu 9.04. Have you already tried 8.10 and if yes, why don't you like it?

- Hmm. I could upload a full list of packages installed. My changes are more based on trial and error and a changelog is difficult. F.a., I removed the acpi-support package when I learnd that it isn't used in Ubuntu at all. There is a suspend to ram file in the powersaved package, so I removed cpufreqd package. Suspend is still not working (I am sorry), but it seems that the new package is a bit more resource friendly. When you personalized your netbook-remix you might consider my changes not even as improvement because some bugs are still in place. The 8mb fat "lifesaver" partition is removed because it might confuse some user and could be a reason of errors some people got with hibernation.
- You got rid of the 8139cp-Message? Nice to know. I installed the new splash because of it ("splashy"), but in my case the messages at logout now also splashed. Its not perfect, but it gives a bit more of a "finished" feeling.
- I tried 8.10 and I got it on 2 Desktops, but I am not really happy with it. Its difficult to say whats making me feel that way but I just can't consider ubuntu 8.10 a finished distro. My hopes for 9.04 and the A110 are a new Openchrome, Kernel >2.6.28 and the new ALSA Drivers, as well some fixed bugs. I my opinion I don't see 8.10 as improvement to 8.04, sounds hard but it is the way I feel.
- Update: Now there is Ubuntu 8.10 Remix. Its kinda ironic. Well, now it works fine and it is stable and only a few days to 9.04.
New Version, new questions
As I did the upgrade on kernel 2.6.24 by myself and some other customizations, too, I heven't tried your new update yet. But only to be sure: the new version of NBR is an updated version of 8.04 whereas the 8.10 .dep package is some different thing, isn't it?
- Yes, the .deb package wouldn't do with NBR.
You write something about improved printing, suspend and bluetooth support. Is that due to improvements in the new kernel version and other updates provided by ubuntu or is it due to improved configuration done by you?
- I installed regular packages which have been left out before to save space.
At the moment I'm pretty lucky with my previous version of your NBR and fighting against some problems that are not caused directly by ubuntu or NBR, so that I have no motivation to update at the moment. But it's a great job you're doing here and I like your NBR very much.
- I don't know how much you have changed your NBR but I suggest to install this new Version. I really did a lot of trimming and bugfixing since Version 1. I did this kind of chaotic and can't provide a changelog, sorry.

PS: As with the third (is it the third version now, I'm not sure?) version, some kind of version number would be great, so that one doesn't have to talk about "the first version" "the version before the actual one" and so on.
- OK, you see me convinced. Looking back, the changes I did were not that much and I already downloaded your new version. As soon as I find some time, I'll install and try it. Greets Cliffhanger 10:35, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
NB Remix v.3 Issues
Some things I noticed:
- After resuming from hibernation WLAN is deactivated (BIOS originally shipped by One, didn't try any other BIOS)
- Resuming from hibernation takes longer than booting
- After resuming from hibernation the last logged-in user is logged in without asking for password -> security risk?
To create a new user profile with the same settings as the netbook user, I did the following:
Create user profile "new_user"
#Copy all files including hidden files from user netbook to new_user sudo cp -R /home/netbook/. /home/new_user/ #Change owner and group of copied files to new_user sudo chown -R new_user.new_users_group /home/new_user/.
Afterwards the user netbook can be deleted. -- Cliffhanger 12:25, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Question to installation
Mutato: Instead of 2 steps:
- gunzip 2G_Netbook.gz
- dd if=2G_Netbook of=/dev/sdx
may be you can also use
- zcat 2G_Netbook.gz | dd of=/dev/sdx
in case it does not work : check filesystem type with fdisk. what is the correct value 83 = Linux. mkfs.xxxx which ?
Answer:
I don't know. The script on the USB-Stick installs from the packed archive so it must be possible, but I never tried because I did't like to wait about 2x 10min installation time in case of a non-bootable system. If "zcat 2G_Netbook.gz | dd of=/dev/sdx" makes things faster, than it is a improvement for sure.
@Cliffhanger and others:
Using dd creating the installation USB-Stick from the Remix didn't work for me too and just led to a screen showing "GRUB" and some lines of cryptical letters after booting the A110 with the stick.
I tried bunch of things like different Live Linux CDs to create the stick (OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Knoppix), playing around with the dd options, tried different USB sticks and external HDs. Always the same.
My answer:
Just use the tool Win32 Disk Imager like discribed in Method 1 on El.x.jtr0's user page to create the stick, and forget about dd.
Things I've learned, went throught:
- Formating, making bootable and other things manipulating the target stick before is senseless because playing back the Remix image will override every change you made anyway: Bootsector, partition table, a.s.o. will be gone.
@El.x.jtr0: The Remix is great, thank you for your work!!
